Citizens of Heaven: Living for Eternity
Good morning, dear brothers and sisters in Christ. Today, we have gathered together to reflect on a powerful message from the Book of Philippians, chapter 3, verse 20. The apostle Paul delivers a profound message about our identity and purpose as followers of Christ. Let us take a moment to read this verse together and let its meaning sink in: Philippians 3:20 (NIV) – “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” The verse highlights the idea of being citizens of heaven and how it plays a pivotal role in shaping our lives. Through this verse, Paul reminds us that our true citizenship is not of this world, but rather in the kingdom of God. As we delve deeper into the scripture, let us reflect on what it means to be a citizen of heaven and how it can influence our lives today.
I. Our True Citizenship
A. Earthly Citizenship:
1. Many of us have earthly citizenship in different nations.
2. We have rights, responsibilities, and privileges as citizens.
3. Earthly citizenship can bring pride and loyalty.
B. Heavenly Citizenship:
1. As Christians, we have dual citizenship: earthly and heavenly.
2. Our truest allegiance and identity are as citizens of heaven.
3. This citizenship supersedes any earthly identity or nationality.
II. Eagerly Awaiting Our Savior
A. Hope in Christ’s Return:
1. Paul reminds us that we eagerly await our Savior, Jesus Christ.
2. This hope should be a constant source of comfort and motivation.
3. Christ’s return signifies the fulfillment of God’s promises and our ultimate salvation.
B. Living with Purpose:
1. Our anticipation of Christ’s return should influence our daily lives.
2. It encourages us to live righteously, seek justice, and show love.
3. We should be watchful, ensuring our lives align with our heavenly citizenship.
III. Implications for Daily Living
A. Earthly Challenges:
1. We face various challenges, trials, and uncertainties in this world.
2. Our heavenly citizenship provides an eternal perspective and hope during difficult times.
B. Treasures in Heaven:
1. Jesus taught us to store our treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:20).
2. Our earthly pursuits should be guided by the values of God’s kingdom.
C. Being Ambassadors:
1. As citizens of heaven, we are also ambassadors of Christ on earth.
2. Our lives should reflect Christ’s character and message to the world. As we approach the conclusion of our journey, my beloved brothers and sisters, let us keep in mind that our ultimate destination is our true home in heaven. Our identity is firmly rooted in Christ, and our unwavering hope is based on His promise to return one day. Even though we are currently living in this world, we are not confined to its ways and limitations. As we eagerly await the return of our Savior, let us act as His ambassadors, demonstrating His love, mercy, and truth to everyone we encounter. Let us be mindful that this truth brings us solace and comfort in moments of difficulty, inspires us to live with purpose and intentionality, and compels us to seek the welfare of others. Our goal should be to become citizens of heaven who leave an enduring and constructive impact on the world. May we be filled with the Holy Spirit’s energy and guidance, enabling us to accomplish great things for the glory of God. Let us be filled with gratitude for the blessings we have been given and the privilege of serving our Lord. In the name of Jesus Christ, we ask for His blessing and guidance. Amen.
