The Great Commission: Our Call to Discipleship
“The Great Commission is not just a command, but an invitation to participate in the greatest mission of all time – the mission of making disciples of all nations. Christians are called to embrace this mission with joy and obedience, knowing that Christ Himself is with them every step of the way, empowering, equipping, and sustaining them until the very end.”
Good morning, beloved brothers and sisters in Christ. Today, we gather to delve into the timeless words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ found in Matthew 28:19-20, known as the Great Commission. This passage serves as our guiding light, our mission mandate, and our source of encouragement as followers of Christ.
As we meditate on these verses, let us open our hearts to the Holy Spirit’s leading and allow His truth to transform us from within.
Jesus Christ commands his disciples to “go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” This mandate continues to apply to Christians today, calling them to actively participate in disciple-making by investing in the spiritual growth and development of others and leading them into a deeper relationship with Christ. This goes beyond mere evangelism and involves teaching, baptizing, and observing all that Jesus has commanded.
Baptism, in particular, symbolizes our union with Christ in his death and resurrection and our incorporation into the body of Christ, the church. It is a public declaration of our faith and commitment to follow Jesus. As such, Christians are called to support and celebrate the spiritual journeys of those who choose to take this important step of faith.
Teaching is also an essential component of disciple-making, as it involves imparting knowledge, wisdom, and understanding of God’s Word. As followers of Christ, we are called to be both learners and teachers, continually growing in our understanding of Scripture and sharing its truths with others.
The Great Commission is not just a command, but an invitation to participate in the greatest mission of all time – the mission of making disciples of all nations. Christians are called to embrace this mission with joy and obedience, knowing that Christ Himself is with them every step of the way, empowering, equipping, and sustaining them until the very end.
